The Position

The Institute is seeking a Director of Development passionate about our mission who can implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy that will expand and diversify the Institute’s revenue streams and donor support, build greater public awareness of the Institute’s mission, and strengthen the impact of programs through innovative approaches to networking and knowledge dissemination. The Director of Development is a member of the senior management team, reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Institute’s Board of Trustees to achieve development goals and objectives. S/he will supervise and mentor a full-time Development Assistant and ensure that the work of the department is well-coordinated with that of communications and marketing and within the Institute’s overall management and administrative structures.

The Director of Development’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual, and foundation donors and prospects
  • Creating and executing a strategy for a large, sustained base of annual individual donors
  • Identify and solicit corporate sponsorship for key events and programs.
  • Setting and managing fundraising goals and schedules
  • Overseeing fundraising mechanisms including grants, events, major gifts, and appeals
  • Assisting the Board of Trustees to become more active in fundraising on behalf of the Institute and staffing the Board’s Development Committee
  • Working with the Executive Director and senior management team to support and expand the Institute’s networks and identify various funding opportunities to support institutional giving
  • Planning and overseeing fundraising events including an annual benefit
  • Attending evening and weekend events or conferences to meet prospective new donors and to steward existing ones
  • Oversee the development and execution of all funding proposals; may work closely with outside grant writers
  • Manage the annual operational budgets for the development department
    • Works collaboratively and creatively with the Director of Communications to appropriately position development opportunities and integrate messages in publications, grant submissions, reports, and collateral materials for cultivating and stewarding donors
    • Overseeing the preparation and publication of periodic reports to the Board and external stakeholders
      • Overseeing the administration of the donor database Requirements:
        • Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources)
        • Bachelor’s Degree required; a relevant advanced degree is a plus
        • An authentic commitment and passion for the mission and values of the Institute
        • Demonstrated success in managing and growing development operations
        • Exceptional relationship-building skills and comfort in proactively and effectively building relationships with major donors and foundations.
          • Expertise in developing and implementing major gift campaigns, annual appeals, and other fundraising tactics
          • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
          • Proven experience in building and/or improving the systems that lead to fundraising results
          • Creative use of new media technologies to generate interest, support, and participation in the institute’s fund and friend raising goals
            • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and guide support staff while collaborating and productively engaging with other colleagues at varying levels of seniority
            • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, remain focused, meet deadlines and prioritize job responsibilities.
              • Flexible, adaptable entrepreneurial style leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
                • Have a direct, personal experience with contemplative practice
    • The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, a team player, a creative problem solver, and confident yet humble in style
